Private Keys Explained

What Are Private Keys?

A private key is a secret number that allows you to spend your cryptocurrency. It’s mathematically linked to your public address but cannot be reverse-engineered from it. Think of it as the password to your digital vault.

Private Key vs Public Key

Your public key (or address) is like your email – you can share it freely to receive funds. Your private key is like your password – it must remain secret and secure at all times.

How Private Keys Work

When you create a transaction, your wallet uses your private key to create a digital signature. This proves you own the funds without revealing the key itself. The network verifies this signature using your public key.

Protecting Your Private Keys

  • Never share your private key with anyone
  • Store backup copies in multiple secure locations
  • Consider using hardware wallets for large amounts
  • Be wary of phishing attempts asking for keys
  • Never enter private keys on websites

Recovery Phrases (Seed Phrases)

Most wallets generate a 12-24 word recovery phrase that can restore your private keys. This phrase is equally sensitive – treat it with the same security as your private key.
